Throughout 2017, we are working with our interns to highlight 52 Creatives from the NEPA region. We believe creativity is a broad term that cannot be easily confined within the walls of one simple definition. We want to know what being creative means to you and how you bring that creativity to light.

Sierra Marsh of Wilkes-Barre, PA is our 39th #NEPACreative of 2017! She brings creativity to the area through vegan candle making.

Two years ago, Sierra felt stuck. She had a college degree, but no job and was looking for a creative outlet. She took a look at her ever growing vintage mug collection and the idea to start making candles in them sparked into her head. She dove right into candle making and developing Whimsy Wicks Candle Co., and never looked back.

Now these aren’t your everyday candles. Not only are they vegan soy candles, so they’re good for the environment, but she creates them in reclaimed materials. Starting with her vintage mug collection, Sierra makes her candles in reclaimed vintage jars, tins and other containers. She says that her mission is to only use containers that are eclectic and whimsical in nature. “This key detail showcases my drive to create products that serve a purpose,” Sierra says, “while experimenting with the unique relationship that exists between old and new.”

When asked what being creative means to her, Sierra commented that to her, “being creative means reaching beyond yourself. It means discovering parts of who you are and and the space you inhabit, and parts you never quite knew existed.”
