Your Audience Isn’t “Everyone”

The biggest mistake businesses make is believing their product or service is for everyone. Unfortunately, it’s not. Paid ads work best when you narrow your audience. Who are your ideal customers? Where do they spend time online? What problems do they have that your business solves? The clearer the picture, the more effective your ad.

Different Platforms = Different Audiences

Think about how you use the internet. Google is about intent; people are already searching for something. Facebook and Instagram lean on lifestyle and storytelling. LinkedIn is about career growth and professional identity. YouTube combines search intent with entertainment. That’s why if you post the same ad everywhere, you’re missing the unique factors that make each platform effective.

The 3-Second Attention Span

People scrolling their feeds or searching online don’t have time to decode your message. If your ad doesn’t tell them in three seconds what you do, who it’s for, or why it matters, you’ve lost them. A simple, direct message almost always outperforms something overly complicated.

Budget Without Strategy is Just Gambling

You can spend $50 or $50,000 and see the same result (nothing), if you don’t have a strategy. Here’s the thing: sometimes it helps to spend a little to understand what works. Start small, test different messages, and track what works before scaling up. Think of it as paying for data first, results second.

Success Is in What Happens Next

An ad is just the door. What happens when someone clicks your ad? Does your website answer their questions? Does your landing page make it easy to take action? Ads don’t work in isolation; they’re part of a bigger journey.

If a user lands on your website and can’t quickly find what they came for, you’ve lost them, and probably wasted your ad spend. A good landing page (or homepage, if that’s where your ads point) should:

Answer their questions right away. Who are you? What do you do? How can you help them?

Guide them to the next step. Whether it’s filling out a form, scheduling a call, or making a purchase, the path should be obvious and frictionless.

Match the promise of the ad. If your ad says “Download our free guide,” the page should deliver exactly that.

Build trust. Through design, testimonials, or clear messaging, your site should reassure them that they’re in the right place.

Think of it this way: the ad gets their attention, but your website earns their trust. Without that connection, your ad dollars are just noise.

Ready to Make Every Click Count?

Ads get attention, but clarity builds connection. Our Brand Voice Workshops help you define your audience, sharpen your message, and guide what happens after the click. Want to turn ad spend into real results? Send us a message.

The post 5 Things to Know Before You Buy Ads first appeared on Coal Creative.

Let’s clear something up right away: marketing isn’t just selling. It’s not about flashy ads or shouting louder than the competition. And it’s definitely not just tossing content into the void and hoping something sticks.

At Coal Creative, we define marketing as something more thoughtful, more strategic.
Marketing is how you share what you do in a way that actually connects with the people you’re trying to reach.

It’s storytelling with purpose. It’s message, timing, audience, and medium all working together, not just to “get attention,” but to build trust and create results.

What Does Marketing Entail?

There are a lot of buzzwords people might sell to you about marketing, but we like to keep it simple: Marketing is the plan.

It’s the framework behind what you say, how you say it, and where it shows up.

That includes:

Clarifying your goals

Understanding your audience

Deciding what platforms and formats make sense

Crafting a message that’s worth someone’s time

Executing consistently and adjusting based on results

In other words, if you’re doing “stuff” online without a plan behind it, you’re not marketing. You’re just posting.

Why Marketing Matters (Even If You’re Small, Busy, or Skeptical)

We’ve worked with clients of every size, from one-person teams to national companies, and here’s the thing we hear the most:

“We know we should be doing something with marketing, but we’re not sure what, or where to start.”

That’s a very normal place to be. But here’s why it matters: If you don’t tell your story, someone else will… or no one will.

Marketing gives structure to your communication. It helps people understand:

Who you are

What you offer

Why it matters

And ideally, it does that before they need you, so that when the time comes, they already trust you.

Collaborate with Coal Creative to Optimize Your Marketing Efforts

Marketing is essential for getting your company’s name out there and connecting with potential clients. It’s also a complex process, however, and many organizations dedicate entire departments to their marketing efforts.

If you’re looking to improve your Instagram reach, you should know how to use every type of content Instagram offers — including Reels, single posts, carousels, stories, and even interactive features like polls and Q&As. A well-rounded content strategy ensures you’re reaching different audience segments and maximizing engagement. In this article, Coal Creative’s social media team is diving into how to use carousels effectively and why they’re a powerful tool for boosting your visibility.

Plus, we’ll even show you some examples of how we’ve used them here at Coal Creative and with our collaborators.

Why Carousels Work

Instagram’s algorithm prioritizes engagement, and carousel posts are a built-in way to increase it. Each time someone swipes through your post, they spend more time interacting with your content. That extra time being spent signals to Instagram that your post is valuable, making it more likely to be shown to a larger audience.

More Swipes = More Engagement

Every swipe counts as an additional engagement metric, meaning carousels will naturally boost your visibility. So instead of just one chance to capture attention with a single photo, you get multiple opportunities within one post by creating a carousel.

How to Make the Most of Carousels

Here are a few ways you can leverage carousel posts to increase engagement and maximize reach:

Don’t have any ideas?

Have five tips? That’s a carousel. A step-by-step tutorial? Perfect for multiple slides. Instead of cramming all your information into one image or video, spread it out across slides for better retention.

Repurpose Instead of Reinventing

Content creation takes time, so work smarter! If you have a long-form blog or video, break it down into digestible slides. One idea can become multiple posts—a carousel today, and a single post later.

Make Every Slide Count

Think of each slide as a new opportunity to hook your audience. Keep your text to the point, use bold headlines, and encourage swiping through by building curiosity between slides.

It’s that time of year again! We’re all getting a new Instagram layout change and, this time around, developers set their sights on our feed and grid layout aspect ratios.

In the past, pictures appeared on your profile’s feed with a 1:1 (square) aspect ratio. Now, they’ll have a 4:5 (rectangular) aspect ratio.

What does this mean for your social media presence? Can you keep uploading the same video and image sizes—or will you have to adjust to the app’s new settings? Let’s dive deeper into Instagram’s new layout change and discover what it means for your standard posts, reels, and more.

What is an Image’s Aspect Ratio?

A picture’s aspect ratio refers to the relationship between the size of its two key dimensions[1]:

Width

Height

Aspect ratio measures the proportions of your image and compares the measurement of one side to the other using the formula X:Y, where X represents the photo’s width and Y denotes its height.

A photo with a 1:1 aspect ratio, as Instagram image sizes used to be, is a perfect square. Under the app’s new 4:5 ratio, pictures will be slightly taller than they are wide.

What Does This Change Mean for Your Posts?

The change in aspect ratio means a shift away from square photos to upright rectangles on your profile’s feed. Whether you run a business or personal account, you’ve likely already noticed this change on your app (or will in the coming weeks).

But does this new look change the way you should take and post photos?

Perhaps, depending on how you already shoot and upload your content. Different aspect ratios have different ideal dimensions to minimize blur and attain maximum image quality, clarity, and sharpness. For instance, on Instagram[2]:

A 1:1 aspect ratio works best with a 1080 by 1080 pixel (px) photo

A 4:5 aspect ratio appears clearest with 1080 by 1350 px photos

Images uploaded to Instagram should now have a 4:5 aspect ratio. Reels can remain in a 9:16 aspect ratio.

If you’ve already been uploading 1080 by 1080 px posts to optimize your photos, switch to the new 1080 by 1350 px standard to keep the same quality. This will prevent cropping, stretching, compressing, and the addition of blank space around the edges of your post.

To ease the transition and meld your shooting style with Instagram’s new aspect ratio, start capturing most of your pictures with your phone held vertically (if you’re not already). This will help your photos fit more naturally into the new 4:5 ratio and minimize any potential resizing.

Will Instagram Reel Sizes be Affected by the Change?

Yes—reels will also follow the new standard 4:5 aspect ratio. But that doesn’t mean you need to change how you plan, shoot, or edit them. The best practices for Instagram Reel sizes remain:

Utilizing a 9:16 aspect ratio

Posting with Instagram’s maximum supported dimensions of 1080 by 1920 px

However, the 4:5 feed previews may lead to some cropping on your reels. If you have any pertinent information to share—like titles, text, or graphics—put them front and center on your reels so they’re visible in the previews.

Instagram will now automatically crop 34 pixels off of each side of your image in the grid preview.

Other Things to Note

The aspect ratio for the previews users will see on your profile grid will be 3:4 instead of 4:5 (like they’ll see on the full photo or video). You should still upload your posts in a 4:5 aspect ratio with dimensions of 1080 by 1350 px—but know they’ll be slightly resized if seen in grid mode until the viewer taps on the post to view it in full size.

This goes for most kinds of posts, including:

Singular photos

Stand-alone videos

Carousel posts

Carousels are of particular importance because users tend to add multiple photos to one post without checking their sizing or aspect ratios. All photos you add to carousels should still maintain the new 4:5 ratio with dimensions of 1080 by 1350 px.

Aside from how to perfect future posts, you may also wonder what will become of all those square photos and videos you uploaded in the past. As Instagram transitions to its new layout, they’ll be altered to fit into the new 4:5 ratio. Photos will be cropped at the sides and appear as rectangles while videos will play with black borders at the top and bottom.

Post Perfect Photos and Create Coveted Clips with Coal Creative

Instagram is constantly updating its layout, preferred aspect ratio, and other settings to remain fresh and engaging. While staying on top of these changes can be fun for certain creators, it can also pose a challenge to busy brands trying to maximize their online presence while still conducting day-to-day operations. That’s why many businesses rely on a marketing agency to create their posts and steer their Instagram page.

Consider for a moment that 90% of the world’s 5 billion social media users follow brands and businesses [1]. Likewise, 76% have purchased at least one item they’ve seen on their feeds.

Evidently, people enjoy interacting with brands and discovering new products via social media. They can also be fickle, however, as 86% of consumers will leave a preferred brand after just a couple of negative experiences [2].

Hence, it’s essential to cater your social media messaging to appease your customer base and keep them interested in your brand. From setting reasonable response times to avoiding scams and spam, let’s set some actionable ground rules for effectively messaging your online followers.

How Quickly Should You Respond to Social Media Messages?

If you have the time and see a message right away, no one’s going to get angry about a lightning-fast response. In fact, nearly half of consumers worldwide expect a reply either immediately or within an hour after messaging a brand on social media [3].

Obviously, this timeframe isn’t always realistic—especially if you’re a small business with minimal staff or when messages don’t roll in during business hours. Nonetheless, it’s still important to respond in a timely manner and not leave your followers hanging, waiting for an answer.

So, the question remains: how quickly should you respond to social media messages?

The best answer is as soon as possible.

That said, in general, try not to:

Leave messages on Read

Let your followers know you’re online without responding

Take excessive time to sort out queries and questions

Here at Coal Creative, we have a rule to respond to all emails within 24 hours and feel the same logic applies to social media messages. If you can answer even sooner, all the better—but over half of consumers agree that one day (or longer) is a reasonable amount of time to wait for a company’s response [3].

Meta even has a handy tool that will send an automatic response if someone messages your business and you can’t get to it right away. This is helpful to provide additional context to users and keep them held over until you’re able to give a proper response. Some items you can include in this message:

A “Thank you!” for their interest in your company

Business information, such as business hours or other ways they can contact you

When they can expect a response

Your business can set this feature up in the Meta Business Suite.

When To Take a Conversation From Your Feed to Your Private Messages

Followers will often comment on brands’ feeds or tag them in posts to elicit engagement, share their stories, or air grievances. Positive public interactions bode well for your brand, benefit your image, and potentially boost future sales, but poor publicity can throw a wrench in your marketing efforts and negatively affect your company as a whole.

Unfortunately, some internet users have taken to posting their issues and complaints on public spaces in the hopes of getting quicker (and better) customer service.

If you experience negative activity on your feed, immediately message the poster personally (if possible), or respond to their comment, and do what you can to rectify the situation. Offer reasonable solutions that will satiate their problems and, if the interaction ends on a positive note, ask if you can remove their previous post—or if they’ll comment underneath explaining how you fixed the situation.

You may also want to take your conversation off public forums and into private messages if:

You want to collect sensitive information—such as real names or addresses—from your clientele

You’re offering special treatment—such as a deal or discount—that’s not available to the general public

The follower has stopped responding to comments on their post

How Can You Tell if a Message is Spam or a Scam?

Unfortunately, not all social media messages are helpful to your business. There’s been a noted rise in spam messaging on Meta targeting small businesses. The recent “Your Facebook page will be deleted” spam targets unsuspecting page admins with claims of imminent deactivation and a link to their supposed appeal process. These messages say you’ve violated Facebook’s terms of use and may appear to come from Meta itself—but the reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

Once the page owner clicks the appeal link, they’re brought to a legitimate-looking login screen complete with Facebook’s layout and branding. After you enter your credentials, however, they’re quickly stolen by the scammer and potentially used to take control of your page.

If you ever get such a message, it’s highly likely to be a scam. To quickly identify and verify for certain that it’s not a legitimate request, you can look for [4]:

A lack of details – If the message doesn’t mention exactly what terms you’ve violated, it’s almost certainly a ploy.

Suspicious senders – Meta won’t ever use Messenger to report a problem to your account. If you receive something that says it’s from Facebook or Meta via Messenger, you’re safe to delete and ignore it.

Logical flaws – Facebook deals with billions of users on a daily basis—so messages claiming only 24 hours to appeal your account (as such scams usually do) don’t realistically fit into its pace of operations.

Spelling and grammar errors – Professional writing is logical and straightforward while spam messages—which facilitate scamming first and syntax second—are often riddled with grammar and spelling mistakes.

Fake URLs on login pages – Check out that login page carefully before entering your credentials—it may appear to mimic a real Facebook link, but will often contain a subtle spelling differentiation upon closer inspection.

A lack of native app notifications – For real policy issues, Facebook will also warn you with an on-site or in-app notification instead of just a singular inbox message.

Pay close attention to these details next time you get a suspicious message—it could prevent you from losing your social media accounts and all the followers you’ve worked to amass.

Over 90% of internet users want to see more video content from their favorite brands. Additionally, two-thirds of consumers prefer learning about new products and services via short-form videos, rather than text and other mediums [1].

Consumers don’t just crave clips, however, but images as well. Nearly half of all marketing professionals use both pictures and videos to appeal to a wider range of clientele and drum up more business [2].

As social media platforms continually change their guidelines regarding video and image size, more and more brands are adding stretched, shrunken, or distorted posts to their feeds. This guide will cover the correct social media sizing rules for Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn in 2024 so your followers get the whole picture as they browse your pages.

Best Sizes for Facebook Reels and Standard Video Posts

Facebook enjoys up to 200 billion hits on Reels on a daily basis [3]. That’s a lot of potential viewership for your products, ideas, and creativity. If your videos are too zoomed in, small, or distorted, users will likely scroll by to the next post.

As of June 2024, Facebook’s official guidelines for posting Reels include [4]:

Keeping them between three and 60 seconds

Using .mp4 format

Reels aren’t the only kind of clips you can use to reach your Facebook followers. Businesses can (and should) also post standard videos to their feeds and pages—but the size of these videos varies depending on exactly where they’ll be hosted. For example [5]:

Your Facebook feed

Facebook stories can also support an aspect ratio of 1.91:1. Meanwhile, videos within search results are limited to 1:1 squares.

The maximum length of Facebook videos also varies as follows [5]:

Facebook Image Size Guide for Business and Event Page Covers

Posting a captivating cover image lets browsers on your page know about your brand, personality, and creative flair. But, if it ends up stretched and skewed, they’re not going to be able to tell what it is.

Thankfully, Facebook lays out some clear guidelines for posting the perfect cover image [6]:

Cover photos are displayed at 830 x 312 pixels on computers and 640 x 360 on mobile

The minimum size for any cover image is 400 x 150—though these dimensions may lead to some distortion

Cover photos load best as an sRBG JPG image that’s 851 x 315 pixels and under 100 kilobytes

You can save this image and use it as a template when creating your business page’s Facebook cover image.

Likewise, if you’re hosting a riveting event and want to include a charming cover photo on its Facebook page, they load best at 1920 x 1005 pixels—so stick to that size for maximum resolution [7].

How to Size Instagram Reels, Story Posts, Videos, and Regular Photos

With the third most daily users of any social media site and the perfect platform for videos, images, and more, you’re not going to want amateur, missized posts on your Instagram page [8].

When it comes to stories and Reels, your best bet is to maintain a 16:9 aspect ratio and use images and videos sized 1080 x 1920 pixels. Keep in mind that their maximum lengths do vary, however: stories top out at 15 seconds while Reels can contain up to a minute of content [9].

If you’re posting regular photos and videos to your feed, their ideal size depends on their orientation [9]:

Square posts – Square pictures and videos maintain a 1:1 aspect ratio and are best posted at 1080 x 1080 pixels for maximum quality.

Portrait – Instagram recommends posting portraits with a 4:5 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1080 x 1350 pixels.

Landscape – If you’re flipping your phone sideways to snap pics or record video, be sure to post them at 1080 x 566 pixels with a 1.91:1 aspect ratio.

Ideal Dimensions for LinkedIn Videos, Photos, and Business Profile Cover Images

Last but certainly not least, let’s discuss the ideal photo and video dimensions for everyone’s favorite professional networking platform: LinkedIn.

When it comes to posting videos, LinkedIn is pretty lenient about its guidelines. They allow a variety of dimensions depending on your chosen orientation and aspect ratio, but these are the maximum recommended (and thus, clearest resolutions) they support [10]:

Vertical videos with 4:5 aspect ratios – 1536 x 1920 pixels

Vertical videos with 9:16 aspect ratios – 1080 x 1920 pixels

Landscape videos with 16:9 aspect ratios – 1920 x 1080 pixels

Square videos with 1:1 aspect ratios – 1920 x 1920 pixels

When it comes to posting photos, what you’re posting dictates its ideal size. When using your company logo as a profile photo, for instance, your best bet is a 300×300 pixel square. Meanwhile, the background image that gives your page character and life displays most clearly at 1584 x 396 pixels [11].

Expanding businesses have complex creative concerns. From the budding seed of a simple, yet beautiful logo, brands can quickly grow to need video, visual and written content to engage and connect with their audiences.

And, when your business really hits, your fans will be ever-hungry for more posts, pictures and creative productions. Luckily, there’s a creative agency in Northeast Pennsylvania that can help you deliver the awe-inspiring, engaging content your customers, clients and connections crave.

And, when you become a retainer client with Coal, you’ll unlock some of the best benefits in the business—including unfettered access to all our services, consistent communication and collaboration and the confidence of knowing NEPA’s most capable creatives have your back.

#1: Keep the Keys to Coal’s Creative Closet

When you become a retainer client with Coal, you’re instantly invited into the family. As a close collaborative partner, you’ll gain access to every service we specialize in. And when we say every service, we really mean it. With Coal powering your creative engine, you can unlock:

Website design and content, including powerfully penned blog posts that drive more traffic to your page

Bold branding services, including impeccable logo design and messaging guidelines that distinguish your business from its competitors

Bespoke ad design for whatever your business needs—from digital platforms to billboards and traditional print mediums like magazines and newspapers

Email marketing campaigns that drive new subscriptions and effortlessly integrate new users into your website

Videos and commercials coordinated into energetic over-the-top (OTT) and social media campaigns

Providing consistent, on-brand content across these different styles and mediums is critical, as customers no longer encounter companies at just one touchpoint—on average, it’s across six [1].

Furthermore, they expect a consistent experience on all of them. That means the same playful humor in your Instagram and TikTok ads, a recognizable color palette on your web and print ads, and a signature voice in all written correspondences. As a retainer client, Coal works to implement all of these creative forms and more to suit your personal desires and business’s direction.

But how do we ensure our content flows seamlessly into your branding and marketing strategy?

Let’s talk about it.

#2: Strategically Steer Your Ship with Consistent Communications

Retainer partners are invited to meet with Coal on a monthly basis—at a minimum—to review our relationship and collaborate on effective marketing strategies. While you’ll stay firmly at the helm, we’ll be your loyal co-captain ready to suggest a route or take the wheel when you need it.

Put simply, with Coal on retainer, we become an extension of your business, working carefully with existing marketing teams. Collaborating with external creatives has meant big boons for businesses as of late, with the market for such partnerships expanding by nearly 30% in 2021 alone [2].

More marketing masterminds means more resources to determine and accomplish creative and advertising goals. Whether it’s crafting a theme for your next social media campaign or reimagining your entire aesthetic, our creative team helps you achieve it faster and exceed your highest expectations.

What’s more, as a retainer client, you don’t have to draft up additional contracts, proposals and offers for every piece of work. Your monthly budget can be put toward whatever services are most relevant at the moment (we’ll iron out the specifics over our monthly catch-up).

#3: Rest Easy with Coal’s Capable Crew of Creatives On Every Job

While we’re not fans of tooting our own horn, we’ll gladly point out when others do it for us. Perhaps the most blatant benefit of becoming a retainer client with Coal is teaming up with an award-winning agency that has the skills and know-how to deliver poignant video, visual and written content. Don’t just take our word for it, however, take:

The American Advertising Foundation’s (AAF) – The AAF’s American Advertising Awards recognized Coal’s 2022 work on The Bench Project as the winner of the Brand Campaign category.
Times Leader Media Group’s – We were honored when, in both 2021 and 2022, Times Leader Media Group’s Best of the Best recognized us as its top Video Production and Ad Agency.

The post Leveraging Social Media to Optimize Your Customer Service first appeared on Coal Creative.

Social media has become an integral part of how we communicate, share, and function as a society. Globally, over 62% of the world’s population regularly uses social media, and stateside in the USA, that figure climbs to nearly 92% [1] [2].

Social media fanatics aren’t just using their favorite platforms to talk to one another; they’re likewise interacting with businesses and brands. Just like the telephone, email, and digital chat platforms of the past, social media is now a go-to avenue for customers hoping to connect with companies and receive customer service.

Thus, in order to provide a convenient, modern way for your clientele to access your brand and your representatives, you’ll need to optimize your social media presence and customer service experience. In this month’s edition of Creative Juice, we’re discussing the importance of providing customer assistance via social media and laying out some best practices for companies to keep your connections (i.e., your clientele) satisfied with your service.

Why Is Social Media a Popular Space For Customer Service?

Pictures of pets, targeted advertisements, and entertaining videos seem to populate the majority of social media users’ feeds. So, that begs the question, where does customer service fit into this endless scroll of content?

Firstly, social media and its users have become complex and multifaceted. For instance, less than half of contemporary users (49.5%) employ social media for its original purpose: staying in touch with friends and family [3]. Instead, users aim to [3]:

Find information for things to do and buy

Find products to purchase

See content from their favorite brands

Follow celebrities or influencers

In essence, many key aspects of consumer culture—including browsing, buying, and being influenced—have become inextricably linked with our social media feeds. And, since users are getting their recommendations and products from social media platforms, they’ve come to expect their customer service in the same space.

Social media users have taken to lodging complaints and queries via their favorite platforms—and they expect responses. Around 79% of social media users allow brands a reasonable 24 hours before expecting a response, but an impatient 39% want their questions answered within 60 minutes [4].

Either way, the masses have flocked to social media as the next space for sorting out customer service concerns—and that’s where your company must meet them.

Best Practices for Providing Customer Service Via Social Media

Assuming you have business accounts on all the leading social media sites (Facebook, Instagram, X, etc.) and you opt-in to receive messages, customers will likely reach out to you with questions or complaints. In order to assist them with their issues and provide the best possible customer experience, you should:

Be responsive – As previously mentioned, many customers expect lightning-quick responses to their social media queries. Making clients wait extended periods for your answer will only compound the frustration or concern they’re feeling with their issue and may cause them to second guess their relationship with your brand. So, answer as quickly as possible and, if they contact you outside of business hours, set an away message that lets them know when you’ll get to their query as soon as you can.

Be cordial – Just like sales personnel represent a brand in brick-and-mortar storefronts, your social media pages speak for your company online. Always use a cordial tone and try to amicably resolve each customer’s requests. Remember, some customers will reach out to you publicly via your Facebook timeline, Instagram comments, or X mentions. All your followers and connections will be able to see these interactions, so be kind and don’t say anything that will reflect poorly on your brand.

Offer resolution – When customers come forward with complaints and questions, they want satisfactory answers that will solve their issues. Whether it’s a piece of solid advice, a discount for a prior negative experience, or an update on the status of their order, strive to provide solid responses that ultimately resolve their problem.

Supplement with Automation– Chatbots have been on the rise in recent years and it’s simple to see why: they cost next to nothing in comparison to real customer service agents and they can work around the clock. Furthermore, 62% of consumers say they actually prefer speaking with a chatbot versus a human representative [5]. Despite their popularity, chatbots aren’t perfect. Recently, Canadian flagship airline Air Canada was held legally liable for a policy its chatbot invented and was subsequently forced to pay a user compensation as a result [6]. Before signing up for an automated service, debate what is the best approach for your business.

All in all, customers are going to turn to social media to ask their questions and air their concerns. So, when they do, it’s best to be prepared to deliver excellent customer service by leaning on these best practices.

Coal Creative: Where Social Media Brilliance Meets Customer Service Excellence

Are you already using social media to engage with customers and build a following? If so, then you can double down on these efforts and meet your audience where they need you most—in the customer service department.

Companies who invest in social media to provide customer support close the digital gap with their audience and provide a unique online experience. If this sounds daunting, know that we’re here to help. At Coal Creative, we’re always ready to support your mission of providing excellent customer service through your social channels.

While certain businesses are defined by their leaders or ideas, consumers generally recognize brands through their aesthetic features, rather than their commercial operations.

In fact, recent studies into product design reveal that customers are more likely to choose aesthetically pleasing items from brands even if they’re not as functional as their plainer counterparts [1]. Similarly, well-designed websites have been found to boost consumer confidence and inspire more sales [2].

Put simply, business aesthetics often outweigh function when it comes to winning consumer trust—and your brand’s creative assets are the primary way in which consumers experience your business. In this edition of Creative Juice, we’ll discuss the importance of crafting memorable, well-designed creative assets to boost your social media presence and, ultimately, your brand’s success.

What Are Creative Assets and Why Are They Important?

Creative assets encompass the content users see in your advertising campaigns, on your website and social media pages, and on your products. There is a wide variety of creative assets a business may choose to represent itself with, including:

Logos

Branding elements, such as signatures colors, and fonts

A website

Social media pages with well-branded graphics and video content

Physical mediums, such as business cards or pamphlets

These assets are essential to your success because they speak for your business. Together, they help you tell your brand story and allow consumers to easily identify and connect with your brand.

How can you take advantage of these assets? Check out the following tips:

Spice Up Your Social Media

Memorable creative assets are particularly important for bolstering your social media presence. 90% of users follow brands on social media and nearly 80% interact with businesses via their messaging services [3] [4].

In essence, social media is the primary way in which consumers engage with brands. Using memorable creative assets enhances the user experience and keeps your brand at the top of consumers’ minds—even after they’ve left your page.

To keep your followers engaged and excited, utilize:

An identifiable tone in your posts and client interactions

An easy-to-remember handle across your different accounts

Consistent aesthetics, such as a quickly recognizable logo for your profile picture

And we’re not just talking about photos or graphics, either. These days, video is king, with Reels and TikToks dominating the bulk of shared content. Having well-branded video content ensures you are telling the story of your brand—in the way you want. From scroll-stopping ads to heartwarming employee highlights, make sure that all your video content aligns with your brand’s tone, voice, and look.

Lean on a Lovable, Laudable Logo

Think of a globally-recognized company, corporation, or brand. More likely than not, you’re already picturing their logo—especially if it’s a particularly memorable one. From the signature swoop to the golden arches and those coffee-curating mermaids, the world’s biggest brands have instantly recognizable logos.

This kind of instant recognition is key in a consumer market where logos are the true face of your business. Case in point: 75% of modern consumers say they identify brands by their logos—so pick something that will stay tattooed in their memories for years to come [5].

Stick to Your Signature Shades

Some of the world’s biggest brands aren’t only recognizable by their logos, but also their associated colors. The most famous sports cars and cola cans, for instance, come in brilliant shades of red—and we don’t even need to mention company names for you to recognize them.

Other brands go all in on company colors by creating and copyrighting their own hues. Some of the most famous examples of this include [6]:

UPS’s bespoke brown

Barbie’s patented pink

Target’s robust red

These signature shades not only give brands their own unique flair, they also help boost recognizability. Once you have a custom color associated with your business, brand awareness and recognition can increase by as much as 80% [7]. So, to build an association between your company and its colors, consistently choose the same eye-catching shades for your social media pages, website, and other platforms.

Optimize and Stylize Your Site

Websites are essential for conducting business in our modern commercial landscape—though nearly a third of brands are missing this crucial asset [8]. Furthermore, it’s not enough to just have a website; it must be aesthetically pleasing and fully functional, too.

As mentioned, consumers place a higher degree of trust in websites they deem well-designed [2]. Additionally, users are exceptionally quick to form opinions about a website—taking, on average, just 0.05 seconds [8].

Because your website is often your customer’s first impression of your business, their image of your brand may be instantly sullied if something about your site is off. So, when designing your website, follow your brand’s style and aesthetic, but ensure it’s easily navigable and glitch-free as well.

Make Assets Memorable Across a Myriad of Mediums

While consumers will mostly encounter your brand via digital spaces such as social media and your website, physical mediums are still important for your overall brand experience and story.

Business cards, for example, are still highly relevant to contemporary commerce. Approximately 27 million are printed every day and, when they’re creative and memorable, they can be incredible assets for your company [9]. Even simply adding color will make consumers hold onto them ten times longer than if they’re black and white—so bust out those signature shades once again [10]!

Business cards aren’t the only physical advertising medium to consider, either. Depending on your targeted demographics, you may also want to think about crafting:

Pamphlets

Flyers

Ads for newspapers and magazines

Such mediums are particularly influential to consumers aged 65 and older, a majority of whom admit to making purchases directly influenced by print advertisements [11].

No matter what creative assets you choose to utilize for your business, however, remember to make them your own and tell a consistent brand story that consumers can instantly recognize across any touchpoint.

Crafting Hot Creative Assets For Your Business? Fire Them Up with Coal!

Dreaming up and designing memorable creative assets is key to telling your brand’s story. But not everyone has the visionary, artistic, or technical skills to create logos, websites, social media posts, and other key assets.

If you need a helping hand with these endeavors, working with a reputable creative agency can facilitate bold and beautiful creative assets. At Coal, we can suggest designs, dream up prototypes, draw out drafts, and revise assets to your liking.

So, if you’re looking for a creative collaborator, you know just who to call.

Instagram and TikTok are two of the leading social media spaces that businesses can leverage to connect with existing and potential customers. With over 3 billion combined accounts, Instagram and TikTok are the most frequented platforms on the web, making them fertile grounds for building a loyal base of consumers [1].

However, with over one million collective hours of online video streamed every single minute, there’s a cavalcade of competition for contemporary content creators [2]. In order to stand out in this boundless sea of video, you’ll need to create clips that are smart, snappy and shareable.

Luckily, the lightning-fast format of Instagram Reels and TikTok gives savvy brands the opportunity to show off their style with quick and compelling content. To get the most out of this pair of platforms, we’re explaining the essentials of editing short clips for TikTok and Instagram Reels that show off your brand and help build your customer base.

The Fundamentals of Instagram Reels and TikTok

Let’s begin with the basics. Instagram Reels and TikTok are both tailor-made for sharing quick, captivating clips. However, their permitted lengths vary:

Instagram Reels – Reels allow you to record (or upload) videos up to 90 seconds in length [3].

TikTok – TikTok videos are split into three distinct categories: videos up to 60 seconds in length, clips that are exactly 15 seconds and uploaded videos, which can be as long as three minutes or, for some users, up to 10 minutes [4].

Beyond these different time limitations, both Reels and TikTok provide users with various tools such as filters, backing audio and graphic effects to enhance their videos. To see what each platform offers specifically, let’s break them down separately.

Resources For Revamping Reels

After tapping the record button and capturing a Reel on an Android or Apple device, you’ll be given some options for making quick edits. Prior to going live with your clip, you’ll be able to add in:

Audio – You can select from Insta’s vast, varied library of available music or select an original track from your device to patch into your clip [5]. Aim to choose tunes that speak to your target demographic and reflect your brand’s intended message.

Text – You can add text and customize its color, font and size. Then, after creating a text block, you can select when, where and for how long it appears on screen [6]. Take advantage of this tool to add context to your content and remind viewers of your brand’s name and tone.

Stickers and other flashy features – Beyond the basic emoticons and GIFs, Insta also allows you to tack on a plethora of advanced, interactive add-ins. With the Stickers option, you can add in features such as captions, countdowns, weather information, donation pages, locations, external links, quizzes, questions, mentions and more [6]. Including at least one of these features encourages users to share and engage with your video, potentially spreading it to new audiences.

Effects – From imbuing everything with a sepia tone to turning yourself into the sun, there’s a plethora of fun effects at your disposal with Reels. Use them to personalize your content and give your videos an unmistakably on-brand touch.

Alongside these flashy add-ins, Insta also empowers you to perform basic edits on your videos, such as cutting and splicing multiple clips together or trimming off superfluous segments.

Tools For Tuning Up TikToks

Like Reels, TikTok also allows you to splice and stitch together multiple videos to create one post. Additionally, you can enhance your content by adding:

Sounds – On top of zany sound effects, you’ll have access to TikTok’s wealth of free-to-use songs, as well as the option to record your own voiceover [7]. To optimize a video’s potential reach, consider adding a trending tune that may draw more viewers onto your page [15].

Effects – From stickers to emojis and filters for your video, TikTok offers a variety of ways to gussy up your clips [4]. Like with Reels, adding these aesthetic accouterments can give your videos the personal touch that your base expects from your content.

Covers – Covers, colloquially called thumbnails, allow you to pick a still image to represent your video to users browsing their feeds [4]. Select something interesting and evocative that entices scrollers to click on your clip.

Both TikTok and Instagram Reels offer comparable, yet unique features for users to customize their clips and make them more engaging. Likewise, there are similar strategies you can use to optimize your brand’s reach on both platforms.

Best Practices for Editing Reels and TikToks

There’s a plethora of different approaches when it comes to posting TikToks and Reels. Your brand’s image, offerings and marketing strategy can all dictate your clips’ content and editing style. Nonetheless, we’ve hashed out some basic guidelines for businesses and individuals alike hoping to use these two video titans as a means of expanding their bases:

Mull Over The Metrics

Whether it’s Creator Tools on TikTok or Insights on Instagram, valuable demographic details await users of either app. These essential analytics tell you where your videos are popular and provide key gender and age information that can help you shape how you write and edit your content [8] [9].

Millennial and Gen Z viewers, for instance, crave clips that foster connection and communication with other app users [10]. Older demographics, however, want videos that defy their age stereotypes and help them feel young again [11].

So, when choosing what tunes, polls or text to include with your clip, carefully consider who’s most likely to view your content and edit accordingly.

Encourage Interaction

Shareability is the cornerstone of modern digital marketing. Patching in an Add Yours sticker to your Reels allows users to respond to your prompts and link back to your post [12].

Similarly, TikTok’s Duets allow you to put your video side-by-side with other creators and permit your fans to do the same with your clips [13]. Make frequent use of both features to optimize interaction with your videos and extend your reach to new users and audiences.

Tap Into Trends

Keeping a keen eye on the latest trends in your brand’s market allows you to stay on top of what’s hot in your industry. Furthermore, riding the popularity wave of ongoing trends prompts new users to discover your brand and its offerings.

To find the latest trending hashtags and topics on Instagram, use the Explore page to see what other users in your space are turning out. Determine what’s hot, then edit your clips to contain the latest video and textual content lighting up Insta’s algorithm to get in on the fun [14].

Similarly, TikTok’s Trends page allows you to explore the hashtags, songs and creators currently making their rounds on the platform [15]. Get a sense of what’s popular and relevant for your brand, then piggyback off these trends to boost discoverability and engagement.

Employ External Edits

Instagram and TikTok both have fairly decent editing capabilities built into their interfaces. If you want to take your videos to the next level, however, consider using an external app, like CapCut, to enhance and manage your videos prior to posting them to your accounts.

With the right program, you can enhance color, add in a wider array of special effects and post to multiple sites—all without having to open either Instagram or TikTok [16].

And, if you want to elevate your clips even further, consider consulting Coal’s poignant and proven video editing services.
