Beth Gilbert | The #NEPACreative Series | Coal Creative

Throughout 2017, we are working with our interns to highlight 52 Creatives from the NEPA region. We believe creativity is a broad term that cannot be easily confined within the walls of one simple definition. We want to know what being creative means to you and how you bring that creativity to light.

Beth Gilbert is our 34th #NEPACreative of 2017. Beth brings creativity to the area through serving the community on the Wilkes-Barre City Council.

Beth has been involved in politics since 2011. When she took on the position serving the city council in January 2016, she knew she could make a difference in the Wilkes-Barre community.

Literally getting her hands dirty, she participates in organizing cleanups throughout her district to keep the city clean.

Beth has thought outside the box in introducing legislation to things they have never been introduced before. Beth was the first person to translate my council Facebook page into Spanish to reach out to their Spanish-speaking neighbors. She also wrote and introduced the Anti-Discrimination Ordinance that passed last fall. This ordinance effectively makes discrimination against any member of the LGBT community illegal in cases of housing, employment, and accommodations.

Communicating with her constituents is a key role into her every day job. She is able to be reached more effectively than just a phone call or an email. She connects with them through social media in which not only she can express her ideas, but her community as well.
