Throughout 2017, we are working with our interns to highlight 52 Creatives from the NEPA region. We believe creativity is a broad term that cannot be easily confined within the walls of one simple definition. We want to know what being creative means to you and how you bring that creativity to light.
Sara Pisak of Sugarloaf, PA is our 35th #NEPACreative of 2017. Sara brings creativity to the area through creative writing in the form of both nonfiction and poetry.
As a child, Sara would compose short stories about her friends, family, and even sometimes animals. She would then illustrate them, staple the edges and give her “books” to friends and relatives. This is a similar tale to how a lot of kids expressed creativity while growing up. However, in Sara’s case, at the young age of twelve she had her work published by a journal. Now an adult, Sara wants other kids to feel what she felt writing at their ages, and have that same feeling of exhilaration seeing their names printed as she did. She does this by conducting writing workshops with both elementary and high school level students. These workshops not only give students a creative outlet, but teaches them the fundamentals of language, literature, and creativity.
When asked what being creative means to her, Sara responded by saying that being creative is not only a chance to express yourself, but also the opportunity to come to terms with the often chaotic world around you. She also commented that creativity should be utilized to assist communities in having conversations, sometimes uncomfortable ones, that discuss their impact on the world and people around them.
