Sam O’Connell | The #NEPACreative Series | CoalCreative
Throughout 2017, we are working with our interns to highlight 52 Creatives from the NEPA region. We believe creativity is a broad term that cannot be easily confined within the walls of one simple definition. We want to know what being creative means to you and how you bring that creativity to light.
Sam O’Connell is our 41st #NEPACreative of 2017. Sam brings creativity to the area through his music and more recently through his own music project called Noxen.
The start of Sam’s journey to producing his own solo music project began when he dropped out of film school. He moved back to NEPA, where he and Matt Simoncavage co-founded Tunefly. Tunefly is a mobile app and community for musical artists, fans and venues that is focused on music discovery in your local area. Through Tunefly, Sam had the rare opportunity to work with some incredible musicians in our local area of NEPA and beyond. Working with these artists inspired Sam to start his own solo music project, titled Noxen after his home town. Noxen is planned to be released later this month.
Sam says that some of his major influences include Andrew Belle, Paul McCartney, mewithoutyou, Lord Huron, Kevin Garrett, Maggie Rogers and Justin Timberlake. On top of these inspirations, he is also constantly being inspired by his family and life on the farm. Aside from writing and recording music, Sam likes to spend time with his family in his spare time. His family including not just his wife and two dogs, Walnut and Willow, but also their six chickens and their pig Mabel. When asked what being creative meant to him, Sam remarked that being creative is problem solving – coming up with an idea and pushing yourself until it’s done.
