Throughout 2017, we are working with our interns to highlight 52 Creatives from the NEPA region. We believe creativity is a broad term that cannot be easily confined within the walls of one simple definition. We want to know what being creative means to you and how you bring that creativity to light.
Sam Kuchwara from Scranton is our 43rd #NEPACreative of 2017. Sam brings creativity to the area through visual art, especially painting and mixed media work.
When being a creative mind, one may think you can only be one thing. You must be a painter, a photographer, a performer. However, being a creative mind may mean you love all things creative, and get your hands into many different creative outlets. Sam is the perfect definition of this. Sam started working with visual art at Boston College in 2010. His art is inspired by many things, from the locations he chooses to base his work off of to the materials he uses themselves. He attempts to use as much found material at possible to create something new from something used.
Aside from his visual mixed media art, Sam also works with a friend to DJ a themed dance night in Scranton called Electric City Boogie once a month. He says that helping curate boogie brings his love of art to life literally, through being able to come up with fun ideas for themes and costumes. It also ties in his love of visual art by being able to create fun and engaging flyers, as well as his love of music. “Finding music for the events gives me a chance to go back into things like 2000s or surf music to include both songs that are interesting and maybe new to people,” he says, “while still playing other songs that are fun because they’re so familiar.”
Aside from all his creative endeavors, Sam loves to run and will be doing his second Boston Marathon in the Spring. To Sam, creativity is a culmination of the textbook definition of creativity as well as ones one existing definition as well. Sam comments that “If you’re genuinely passionate about something, even if it is not a typical art form, it will foster creativity.”
